The Anatomy of a “Typo Split”: How Bad Naming Conventions Can Sabotage Your Creative Reporting

Many performance marketers find themselves in this situation: they’re reviewing top creatives for the month or quarter, and an ad they already know is strong isn’t anywhere near the top of the list. They go looking for it and they find it. Twice. Once under one name, once under another that’s almost identical, off by a single character. That single character can cost them the ability to see how well that creative actually performed.

This is considered a typo split, and at times can be one of the most common yet avoidable ways creative performance data gets muddy in reporting.

What a Typo Split Actually Is

Most reporting tools aggregate performance by ad name. It will not realize that:

“IMG_BTS_20260219_v1_gray” and “IMG|BTS_20260219_v1_gray” are the same creative.

It reports them as two different ads based on your filter.

The result would look something like: a single creative’s spend, impressions, and leads get divided across two separate rows.

Split apart, the data understates how well – or in some cases, how poorly – the creative angle actually performed. When merged back together, the real picture often looks completely different.

The Solution is in the Structure

Most people’s instinct is to say “we just need to be more careful.” The actual fix is a naming convention so rigid that there’s no room for a typo to create a new, valid-looking name.

That means:

  1. A fixed, non-negotiable structure. Something like: TYPE | TESTID | TREATMENT | OFFER/VERSION | CONCEPT | VARIANT For example: VID | T03 | WrinkleRelaxer | 15%Off | Before&After | V2
  2. A consistent delimiter, chosen deliberately. It’s easy to accidentally have errors. For example, a stray character can get substituted for the delimiter. Whatever separator you choose – a pipe, an underscore, a dash – the goal is picking one that’s unlikely to be miskeyed, and using it exactly the same way, every time, across every creative.
  3. Build naming from creative testing strategy: The strongest version of this approach isn’t only the naming convention – it’s a full tracking system where every creative gets a unique test ID when it’s created, connected through an idea board, into production, and back into reporting. We use this full circle framework for the most accurate data on creatives. That way, whether you’re looking at spend, leads, or engagement, everything traces back to a single, consistent identifier that can’t fragment the way a loosely-typed name can. It also means you can filter your reporting by category, angle, or format at any time and instantly see what’s actually worked.

Why This Matters Beyond “Clean Data”

A typo split isn’t just an annoyance. It actively distorts decision-making:

  • Winning creative gets treated as mediocre, and doesn’t get scaled or iterated on the way it should if data is not accurate.
  • Budget and creative resourcing decisions may be made based on incomplete information, because the report you’re looking at isn’t actually showing you reality.
  • Patterns become invisible. If you’re trying to learn what’s working – a hook, an angle, a format – and half your data on a top performer is sitting in a separate, unmerged row, you’re drawing conclusions that aren’t showing the full picture.

Takeaway

Clean reporting isn’t just a nice-to-have for creatives. It’s the foundation everything else in performance creative is built on – what you scale, what you kill, what you iterate on. A naming convention might feel like the most boring part of a creative strategy. It may also be one of the few things preventing you from identifying a top performer that can potentially lead to a more efficient testing campaign.
